Impact of inflation and massive consumer debt starting to bite

Speech by Vince Cable on Mon 28th Apr 2008

Commenting on the Government announcement that the UK economy is growing at its slowest pace for three years, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said:

"The impact of high inflation and massive consumer debt is now starting to bite.

"As overstretched families struggled to meet household bills and debt repayments, it was inevitable that economic growth would take a hit.

"Even at the time of the last budget the Chancellor's growth forecasts seemed like a work of fiction. These figures merely confirm that.

"Ministers need to admit that the difficulties we now face are down to far more than simply the US credit crunch."
